The oatcake, or if you’re from outside of Stoke-on-Trent – the Staffordshire oatcake, is the best thing you’ll ever eat. Fact! Just ask anyone in Stoke-on-Trent!
The Staffordshire oatcake is a kind of savoury pancake made from oatmeal, flour and yeast. It’s a local speciality to Stoke-on-Trent and surrounding areas. Staffordshire oatcakes date back to the 18th century and they became a staple diet of the pottery workers in the 19th century. They fuelled the workforce of the North Staffordshire industries. In the 20th century oatcake shops had emerged and the more successful bakers would have built brickrooms in their yards to bake the oatcakes. The oatcakes were then often sold through the windows of houses to customers on the street.
Oatcakes remain hugely popular and their longevity is down to their versatlilty. There are lots of Oatcake shops selling them either ready to eat with fillings such as melted cheese, bacon, mushroom, sausage, and egg, or in batches of six or twelve for people to take home and cook themselves.
