A wet day in Stoke
You won’t believe this but the sun doesn’t always shine in Stoke! We are located in the north midlands and is does tend to rain from time to time. However, don’t despair - we have some fantastic indoor attractions from visitor centres, museums, factory shops, and factory tours. You can even have a go at making your own pottery here! So if the weather isn’t looking great, don't let it get you down - come and enjoy all that Stoke-on-Trent has to offer!
The World of Wedgwood is great for a rainy day! Visit the Wedgwood Museum, go on a factory tour, shop till you drop, and have a go at one of the many creative opportunities available – you can even design our own dinner service!
There are other brilliant hands-on opportunities available from decorating and painting a unique piece at Emma Bridgewater and Royal Stafford, to throwing a pot and decorating a china flower at Gladstone Pottery Museum.
Gladstone Pottery Museum is the only complete Victorian pottery factory from the days when coal burning ovens made the world’s finest bone china. There’s also an exhibition dedicated to the story of the toilet – Flushed with Pride!
The factory tour at Middleport Pottery is fantastic! See how Burleigh Pottery is still produced using the same traditional handcraft methods unchanged since the 1880s. There’s also a Grade II listed bottle oven, Victorian offices, a fully restored steam engine, a gorgeous canal-side café, and the Burleigh factory shop where you can grab yourself a bargain!
Other factory tours not to be missed include the Emma Bridgewater factory tour and the Moorcroft factory tour.
Immerse yourself in the history of The Potteries at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery. The museum not only houses a nationally recognised collection of Staffordshire ceramics but is also the proud home of the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest and most valuable Anglo-Saxon treasure ever found.
The Dudson Museum and Spode Museum Heritage Centre are other great gems to discover. They provide an interesting insight into the background and history of two great ceramic companies.
Ford Green Hall offers visitors a fascinating insight into the life of the 17th century. The rooms of the unique 17th century timber framed farmhouse are furnished with an outstanding collection of textiles, ceramics and furniture.
If you’re feeling active, why not visit Dimesions Leisure Centre or Fenton Manor Sports Complex. Dimensions is great for kids with an amazing splash pool with water rapids, hot spas, fountains and a 65m dragon slide. Fenton Manor offers a wide variety of exciting activities in its pools, sports arenas, gyms and health spa.
