The Card
New Vic Theatre – Until 10 June
From a young age, loveable rogue Denry Machin has his eyes set on great things and when life gives him an opportunity, he takes it.
A washerwoman's son, his humble beginnings won't hold him back from achieving a life he loves to live. Helped along by a little bit of luck, a lot of initiative and just a touch of chutzpah, he's soon enjoying fame and fortune, becoming the most celebrated 'card' in The Five Towns!
A revival of Claybody Theatre's original production seen at Fenton Town Hall in 2022, this joyous stage adaptation of Arnold Bennett's classic comic novel is set in a fictionalised Stoke-on-Trent known as The Five Towns. Bennett felt that, from a literary point of view, Five Towns sounded better than six. 'Stokies' will tell you otherwise!
Directed by Conrad Nelson (Anna of the Five Towns, Brassed Off) The Card is filled with music, mayhem and lots of laughter for a production that's identified with "the great cause of cheering us all up!"
Around the World in 80 Dolls
The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery – Until 27 August
Inspired by the 150th anniversary of the publication in 1873 of the adventure novel, Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, our family-friendly summer exhibition, explores the museum's wonderful doll collection. The exhibition will showcase dolls collected by Mrs Elsie Maud Young who was the great grand-daughter of William Turner, one of the well-known Turner family pottery manufacturers in Staffordshire.
She visited countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean and Americas, collecting a great number of souvenirs including dolls from each place she visited. Many of these dolls, dressed in their national costume or regional dress, form the basis of Elsie's collection which the museum acquired in 1965.
Around the World in 80 Dolls promises to be a treat for all ages!
FORTYSEVEN: The Last Bottle Ovens and Kilns of The Potteries
Gladstone Pottery Museum - 27 May to 30 July
A photographic exhibition by Phil Crow showcasing the 47 remaining bottle ovens and kilns, spread across 27 locations, across the Potteries.
Celebrating the heritage of the Potteries, this exhibition shows the dark beauty of a bygone industry juxtaposed with photographs from the Warrillow Collection, that depict a thriving industry back in its heyday.
Military Trains
Apedale Valley Light Railway - From 27 to 29 May
Apedale boasts the UK's premier collection of railway equipment from the First World War, and this weekend is the opportunity to see it at work. WW1-era locos will haul passenger trains. Freight trains will see both ww1-era and military trains from later years demonstrated. Visitors can also tour our replica Trench, and learn a little more about the experiences of soldiers during the Great War.
