Winton Square

Described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as ‘the finest piece of Victorian axial planning in the county’, this area has changed very little since its completion in the 19th century. The land on which the square stands was known as Winton’s Wood and Winton’s Field, belonging to the Stoke Church and named for John Sandale. Sandale was a rector of Stoke in the 14th century and signed his name John Winton. The Station was built by Mr John Jay (Kings Cross station, Paddington station). It was opened with a party to which 150 children from workhouses and 400 ‘poor and deserving’ families were invited. The Square houses a statue of Josiah Wedgwood central to the 8 listed buildings within the conservation area. It is a key area of arrival for people accessing the city and is little changed from when the station first opened.
